CAR REVIEW | Audi | Audi or Audi AG (Xetra: NSU) is a German manufacturer of various type of automobiles, from supermini to crossover SUVs in various body styles and price ranges that are marketed under the Audi brand, positioned as the premium brand within the Volkswagen Group.
The company is headquartered in Ingolstadt, Germany, and has been a wholly owned (99.55%) subsidiary of Volkswagen AG since 1966, following a phased purchase of its predecessor, Auto Union, from its former owner, Daimler-Benz. Volkswagen relaunched the Audi brand with the 1965 introduction of the Audi F103 series.
The company name is based on the surname of the founder August Horch, his surname meaning "listen" in German—which, when translated into Latin, becomes Audi.
The largest shareholder of Audi is Volkswagen AG, which holds over 99 percent of the share capital. Volkswagen AG includes the consolidated accounts of Audi in its own financial statements. In recent years, the possibility of Audi being spun off or otherwise divested by Volkswagen has been mooted.
From 2002 up to 2007, Audi headed the Audi Brand Group, the Volkswagen Group's automotive sub-division, consisted of Audi together with SEAT and Lamborghini, that was focused on more sporty values, with the marques' product vehicles and performance being under the higher responsibility of the Audi brand.
On 14 November 1899, August Horch (1868–1951) established the company A. Horch & Cie. in the Ehrenfeld district of Cologne, but because of dispute between him and the supervisory board, he had to leave the company. A few years later, he established a second company, Horch Automobil-Werke GmbH. The company traces its origins back to 1909 and August Horch. The first Audi automobile, the Audi Type A 10/22 hp (16 kW) Sport-Phaeton, was produced in 1910 in Zwickau.
In 1909, Horch was forced out of the company he had founded. He then started a new company in Zwickau and continued using the Horch brand. His former partners sued him for trademark infringement, and the German Supreme Court (Reichsgericht in Berlin) finally determined that the Horch brand belonged to his former company.
Since August Horch was barred from using "Horch" as a trade name in his new car business, he called a meeting with his best business friends, Paul and Franz Fikentscher from Zwickau. At the apartment of Franz Fikentscher, they discussed how to come up with a new name for the company. During this meeting, Franz's son was quietly studying Latin in a corner of the room. Several times he looked like he was on the verge of saying something but would just swallow his words and continue working, until he finally blurted out, "Father – audiatur et altera pars... wouldn't it be a good idea to call it audi instead of horch?" "Horch!" in German means "Hark!" or "hear", which is "Audi" in Latin. The idea was enthusiastically accepted by everyone attending the meeting. The first Audi car, the Type B, 10/28PS was delivered early in 1910.
Audi started with a 2612 cc inline-four engine model followed by a 3564 cc model, as well as 4680 cc and 5720 cc models. These cars were successful even in sporting events. The first six cylinder model, 4655 cc appeared in 1924.
August Horch left the Audi company in 1920 for a high position at the ministry of transport, but he was still involved with Audi as a member of the board of trustees. In September 1921, Audi became the first German car manufacturer to present a production car, the Audi Type K, with left-handed drive. Left-hand drive spread and established dominance during the 1920s because it provided a better view of oncoming traffic, making overtaking safer. - CAR REVIEW

2011 Audi A5 - Car Review; 2011 Audi A5 will continue unchanged for model year 2010. The Base A5 is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder. The handling is agile. The cabin is quiet and comfortable. S5 Coupe gets a 4.2-liter V8, while the convertible uses a new 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine. Rear seats are tight for two adults. Convertibles are well-insulated soft, which can be used at low speeds.
Paul Hagger: After a few days with 2011 Audi A5, I went from being indifferent to being quite a fan of the sporty 4-door. Although the A5 doesn't have any headline-grabbing features — it's no powerhouse, its looks are sophisticated but perhaps a little conservative, and it's fuel-efficient, but not unusually so. However, everything gels very nicely. By perfectly matching together every system, Audi has made the A5 into the best long-distance cruiser I've ever driven. And just as the driver never feels stressed, neither do the car's components. The A5 feels like it can run forever and give year after year of smiles. –Car Review
Mike Meredith: Audi's A5 is one of the most beautiful cars on the road today, and the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 under its hood is one of the world's best engines. The vehicle feels nimble and quick on its feet, steering is precise with good feel, and the quattro all-wheel drive balances the overall package quite nicely. A little extra power from a standstill might be nice, but once the A5 is moving, the broad torque curve of the turbo 4-cylinder combined with the 8-speed automatic delivers plenty of power whenever you need it. And it does so with great fuel economy — 24 mpg combined. The interior quality is what you would expect from Audi, and everything in the cockpit is oriented toward the driver. The Audi A5 2.0 TFSI is one of those cars that is very easy to get comfortable with. I'd love to drive it every day. –Car Review
Perry Stern: With its wide grille with curves, the A5 is a new image for Audi. Our test car added a bright red with high level of sporting alloy wheels. However, it seems to provide a level of expectation of performance that is not fully recovered. The 2.0T engine makes the car feel very sexy looking a bit low-power, which is a pity, because the A5 works very well with strong leadership and a smooth ride. On the plus side, I see energy efficiency in the mid-20 in city driving. -Car Review

indian car production june 10 2011, india Audi A6 - Audi announces A6 production in India: Audi, the German luxury car manufacturer, has announced the start of production of the all new Audi A6 in India in Aurangabad. More than 2,000 units of the next generation Audi A6 will run off the production line every year, in the initial years, at the Group’s Aurangabad facility. The official start of production was announced in the presence of Kurt Romeiss, Senior Manager Quality, Audi A6, Jürgen Krieger, Senior Manager PreSeries Center, Audi Neckarsulm and Michael Perschke, Head, Audi India. Dr. Leopold-Theodor Heldman, Consul General, Federal Republic of Germany in Mumbai, graced the occasion as the guest of honour.
“The production of the all new Audi A6 underlines our growing presence in the Indian market and reiterates our long term commitment to customers in India. The commencement of production of this next generation Audi A6 is in line with our long term strategy for India and is a precursor to its much-awaited launch later this year,” said Michael Perschke, Head, Audi India.
Manufacturing of the new Audi A6 will take place in 16 work cycles on one production line at the Aurangabad plant, securing local employment for 126 individuals for the next years to come. The new Audi A6 will be offered with a choice of diesel and petrol engines.
